Gold was first discovered in Barkerville in 1858. The town was named after Billy Barker who struck gold on Williams Creek, became fabulously rich, and in the tradition of many gold seekers who have struck the 'mother lode' he squandered his money on wine women and song and died a pauper.

The discovery of gold had very significant implications for British Columbia and in fact was the catalyst event that brought Canada together as a confederation. Read more about the history of Barkerville!
