Booze - When Whisky Ruled the West
Booze - When Whisky Ruled the West 8.5x5.5" (21.5x14cm) soft cover 271 pages From Winnipeg to the Rockies, whisky kept the prairies in a ferment for fifty years. Taking advantage of the enormous influx of immigrants during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, hotels sprang up in the towns and cities to cater to the prodigious thirst of their patrons. The unrestricted boozing resulted in drunkenness, brawling, petty crime, and the disappearance of many a paycheque. It also resulted in a vigorous and ultimately successful campaign for total prohibition, and from approximately 1916 to 1924 the three Prairie provinces were legally dry.

Robert Service started out as a bank teller, but that changed dramatically in 1904 when his bank transferred him to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. Like everybody else, Service was smitten by the gold fever of the great Klondike gold rush. Only Service mined words, not gold, and within five years was famous as the poet who had captured the essence of the fever, the adventure, the men, and the women.
